Andy Murray’s victory in Bordeaux on his 37th birthday marked his first return to racing since March.
Murray has been sidelined since rupturing ankle ligaments in his third-round loss to Tomas Machak at the Miami Open earlier this spring, but at the ATP Challenger Tour in France, Murray played against the world No. 219 Kerian Jacquet’s performance in the game was not inferior.
The three-time Grand Slam champion won 7-5 2-0 after his French opponent withdrew due to injury more than an hour into the first round on clay.
Murray was tested in the first set and did not break serve until the 11th game. With his third ace, he secured serve to win the first set in 51 minutes.
He broke Jacquet in the first game of the second set, but then had to save two break points to extend his lead, at which point Jacquet retired.
Murray will face another French player in the round of 16, Grégoire Barrere, who adopted a new racquet against Jacquet, using a Yonex racquet instead of his career Head racket that has been used in .
Murray intends to appear at Roland Garros later this month for what could be his last time after saying he did not expect to extend his career “well beyond this summer”.
He last played at Roland Garros in 2020, when he lost in the first round to Stanislas Wawrinka, a player he was also defeated on clay in May 2023.
Murray’s fellow Briton Dan Evans, seeded fifth in the tournament, advanced to the second round with a 6-4 6-4 win over Hugo Grenier. to Harold Mayot.
